THE BLACK BRICK WALL

What does it matter
after so many years
as the trees drop their leaves
that the children have grown
tall enough to find themselves
in the corridor between
doorways and rooms,

suddenly they want to talk
openly to the forgotten father
about building walkways?

What does it matter
when the grandfather clock
is never wound any longer
or if the old man’s shoes
aren’t polished for the funeral?

What does it matter
if anyone celebrates this moment
with drink, food and laughter or a look
at the dusty boots in the woodshed?

Who was it pointed to Orion
in the night’s dark garden
with the round moon aglow?

It was the man with gnarled-pain
and malformed hands. He
who couldn’t hold up their roof.

He who said that’s the Big Dipper
following an invisible line through
black sky naming the North Star.

What does it matter in the silence?
